Understanding and Using Customs Tariff Codes
What is a Customs Tariff Code?
The customs tariff code (HS code, CN code) is an internationally standardized numbering system used to identify and classify goods. Every product has its own unique code.
The Harmonized System (HS)
Developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO), this 6-digit system forms the basis of international trade classification.
Combined Nomenclature (CN)
The 8-digit code used in the EU. The first 6 digits are the HS code, the additional 2 are EU-specific extensions.
TARIC Code
A 10-digit code that includes EU trade measures.
How to Find the Correct Code?
- Determine main characteristics of the product
- Search online databases
- Check classification rules
- Consult experts if needed
Consequences of Classification Errors
- Wrong duty rate applied
- Penalties imposed
- Goods seized
- Delays in clearance
Binding Tariff Information (BTI)
If uncertain about classification, you can request an official BTI decision from customs. This is valid for 3 years and legally binding.
